Description:

A flag to indicate if a student met the civic literacy requirement required by section 1007.25, Florida Statutes based on the group the student belongs to and the method of meeting the requirement.

Coding Instructions:

Beginning in fall 2018, students entering a Florida public postsecondary institution for the first time would need to demonstrate civic literacy by either taking a course identified as meeting the civic literacy requirement or passing an exam identified as meeting the requirement. The civic literacy requirements vary depending on when the student was first enrolled as a degree-seeking student. Each student can be classified into one of three groups based on the first term enrolled as a degree-seeking student:

Group 1: Students first entering the System or FCS prior to fall 2018 do not have a civic literacy requirement.

Group 2: Students first entering the System or FCS in fall 2018 through summer A 2021 must complete a course or exam to meet civic literacy requirement.

Group 3: Students first entering the System or FCS in summer B 2021 and thereafter must complete both a course and an exam to meet the civic literacy requirement.

Those students in group 1 are to be coded N as they do not have to meet the requirement. Those students in group 2 or 3 that met the civic literacy requirement by taking a course as a college-level student (not through an accelerated mechanism) will be marked as Y and will have 3 credit hours populated on the Excess Hours Student Detail report that will be excluded when calculating the excess hours metric for the accountability plans. Credits earned as accelerated mechanisms to meet the requirement are already excluded from excess hours.
